Tips for regular players (catch the spy)
- Give clues that prove you know the word — without naming it. Show you're in on the secret, but don't hand the spy the answer.
- Watch for vagueness. The spy has to bluff, so their answers are often a little too general. Note who keeps things suspiciously broad.
- Don't over-reveal early. If your clue is too specific, you basically tell the spy the word. Save the strong hints for when suspicion is high.
- Compare answers. When two players describe the word very differently, one of them might be faking.
- Ask pointed questions. A well-aimed question forces the spy to commit — and bluff.
Tips for the spy (stay hidden)
- Stay calm and confident. Panic is the biggest tell. Answer smoothly, like you know exactly what's going on.
- Echo the room. Match the tone and specificity of other players' clues so you blend in.
- Listen for the topic. Every honest answer narrows down the secret word — piece it together quietly.
- Deflect suspicion. Accuse someone else at the right moment; nothing hides a spy like pointing at another player.
- Know when to guess. If you're about to be caught, take your shot at the secret word — a correct guess can still win it.
Reading people is everything
At its heart, Spy is a game of psychology. The best players aren't the ones with the cleverest clues — they're the ones who watch faces, catch hesitation, and stay cool under pressure. Practice is the fastest way to sharpen that instinct.
