In the Spy game, the questions you ask are your best weapon. A clever question forces the spy to bluff and slip up; a careless one hands them the secret word. Here are the best Spy game questions and clue ideas to expose the spy — without giving yourself away.

What makes a good Spy question?
A great question has two jobs at once: it should be specific enough to prove you know the secret word, but vague enough that the spy can't guess it from your question. The sweet spot is a question only someone "in the know" could answer naturally.
Questions to catch the spy
- "How often do you use it / go there?" — forces a real, specific answer. The spy has to guess.
- "When did you last encounter it?" — vague topics trip up a bluffing spy.
- "Would you recommend it to a child?" — a subtle judgment question the spy can't fake easily.
- "What's your favorite thing about it?" — honest players answer instantly; the spy stalls.
- "Is it something you'd find at home?" — narrows the field without naming the word.
Clue-giving tips (when it's your turn to answer)
- Answer confidently and quickly. Hesitation is the biggest tell.
- Be specific but not obvious. Show you know the word — don't announce it.
- Match the group's level of detail so you don't stand out (as a spy) or expose the word (as a player).
Questions to avoid
- Anything too direct ("What color is it?") — you'll basically tell the spy the word.
- Yes/no questions with no follow-up — they give the spy an easy place to hide.
Reading the answers
Half of Spy is listening. Watch for answers that are suspiciously general, players who echo others instead of adding new detail, and anyone who takes just a little too long. That's usually your spy. (More in our Spy game tips.)
